Today's post takes a slightly different turn, with more insights to follow. I've embarked on a journey to become a breathwork facilitator. Throughout my explorations with psychedelics and plant medicine, I've grappled with how to weave these experiences into my professional life. Given the legal constraints surrounding psychedelics, their intense nature, and the fact that they don't lend themselves to a daily practice, I've been seeking a more accessible and legal avenue to share the transformative power of these practices. Breathwork emerges as a profound yet practical solution.
What is Breathwork?
Breathwork is a therapeutic practice designed to enhance self-healing by engaging more fully with our respiratory system. This practice encourages the subconscious mind to step forward, orchestrating a harmonious balance across various facets of our health that may have become misaligned, effectively resetting us to our 'factory settings,' so to speak.
This technique aids in rejuvenating physical health, navigating through mental energy and blockages, and offering insights into the more elusive aspects of our existence, such as spirituality. Through breathwork, individuals can tap into the depths of their being, facilitating a holistic approach to healing and self-discovery.
The Method
There are myriad approaches to breathwork, each with its own unique focus and benefits. My choice to pursue ‘Conscious Connected Breathing’ stems from its emphasis on release and letting go rather than retention. This method prioritises the flow of breath, creating a continuous, unobstructed movement that facilitates a deep release of physical and emotional tension. It's this process of surrender and release that distinguishes conscious connected breathing, making it a powerful tool for those seeking to cleanse, heal, and rejuvenate their being. By guiding the breath in a deliberate and deeper flow, the oxygen levels within the body rise, triggering a significant shift in the brain. This shift leads to the deactivation of the ‘Default Mode Network’, a neural network associated with self-referential thoughts and the ego. Essentially, this process helps to sideline the ego and the constructed narratives of the self, thereby granting the subconscious the reins. In this state, one is afforded the chance to tap into the innermost recesses of wisdom. This transition not only fosters a profound sense of inner peace and clarity but also opens the door to deep, transformative healing.
Why am I drawn to Breathwork?
My attraction to breathwork is rooted in its seamless alignment with the PLANETS system I detailed in my “What is Health?” article. Its comprehensive approach benefits each pillar of health, with a notable impact on addressing trauma.
Regular practice of breathwork is a powerful tool for clearing the emotional baggage that weighs us down, much like decluttering a store cupboard that's filled to the brim with past trauma. This clutter, when not addressed, can lead to ill health and a daily sense of malaise. Breathwork provides a route towards a lighter, clearer state of being, aiding in the restoration of equilibrium and overall wellness by facilitating the engagement and processing of accumulated emotions.
I look forward to sharing more insights into breathwork with you in the coming weeks.
